Hi all! New group, app, and plant person here! I have a great friend helping me but work is busy so it’s been difficult to plan plant nights! - I have 2 grow lights and mist serval times daily (a humidifier is coming). - A few babies have a bright yellow leaf and a drooping leaf or some dropping stems. - None have soil thats wet (squeeze and nothing, finger in and not wet), some I would consider moist, several are dry. - ALL plants have drainage and I make sure none sit in water - Concern = overwatering (Overwatering with dry soil—I could be overwatering WHEN I water [a gallon per plant versus a cup], not the frequency in which I am watering). Thanks in advance 🫶🏻

Misting several times a DAY? I think that might be unnecessary! Anyways, I think that as long as you empty anything that has drained after you water them, as you said, you should be fine! :) I usually water until they start dripping from the drainage holes.

Overwaterimg is only a concern if there's not proper drainage. If the soil doesn't have big enough particles to make it airy and move water through it fast enough. You'll notice this if you add water until it drains out the bottom and leave it sitting for a week and it's still soggy. It shouldn't matter if you're using a gallon or ten gallons, so long as air is still circulating through the soil. (If you are using ten gallons though, you'll rinse minerals out of the soil. Which isn't as much of a concern if you're on a regular fertilizing schedule.)

And since it's impossible for me to edit my comment on my phone: get one of those thermometer/hygrometer combos to tell what the ambient temp and humidity is around your plants. You really shouldn't be needing to most very often if they're kept inside with a humidifier. If you want to be really fancy, a company called switchbot sells a thermo/hygrometer and you can use the app to trigger a smartswitch to turn on/off your humidifier when certain thresholds are met. I believe you need their bridge to run it that way, so kind of expensive, but automation is great.

You seem to be a good person to ask, but should household humidifiers that are used for plants, supposed to remain at 60% humidity or lower? It seems to me that somewhere I’ve heard that. Comments? TIA. 🤗💚🪴

Lynda, I usually keep mine between 55 and 60%. Sometimes it drops a bit lower, but my plants don't seem to mind. The issue that occurs with constant high humidity within the home is mold. So set your % to the bare minimum to keep your plants happy

I’ve heard 50 is the max if you want to avoid mold, and I live in a half basement, so I set mine to 45 :/ sometimes it even feels too dry on my skin though! So I let it go a bit 🤫

My plants are okay though! I occasionally mist the more temperamental ones.

And just to be sure that you know, when they talk about mold, they are referring to mold in your house as well as your plants. You need to avoid both.

Maybe only mist them when the plants app suggests?
