HELP! What do I do with him? I’ve had him for like two weeks. He had like 6 leaves when I got him. Then a couple started yellowing, then drooping, then soft and dark yellow. I cut them off. The leaf on the left is actually a baby that just came out & it already hates its life 😒 now my last leaf is down bad. Anything I can do? Or do I move him to the graveyard? Ugh.

I love how gorgeous the A. zebrina is. Sweet petioles! They are not one of the easiest Alocasia plants to take care of (I killed one). I have other varieties of Alocasia that do ok, to, meh to good. I would take it out of the pot and check the roots first and foremost. Check for root rot or dry rot. If the roots are good give them a hydrogen peroxide/water (30/70 respectively) soak and repot her with fresh soil. (They enjoy moist soil but not wet). As long as the roots and petioles are firm, try cutting back one of the leaves to stimulate growth hormones and hope she bounces back. Plants teach us resilience. Right?Happy growing.

They go into dormancy when not happy with their environment. I’ve had a couple do it. One took four months to start growing again. Search on YouTube for their care when they go dormant. The one coming back now is in semi hydro. The one from over a year ago, I would just water now and then when I thought of it. Grew like crazy. Ended up with more shoots coming up and 15 leaves. It is a Polly.

Alocasia’s in general can be fussy but what I’ve learned about alocasia’s, after they look to be dead, is to not give up. Keep the soil moist and 90% of the time the plant will come back to life (the corms will regrow!) just make sure that it’s getting enough light (not direct though) and wait and see what happens

As someone with over 80 alocasias, this pot seems quite big for your plant. My zebrina is about 2 years old and still in a 4” pot. How are the roots looking and how much light is it getting? As long as the rhizome (bulb) is firm, there is hope. If you cut back the latest leaf, make sure you cut it high enough to not cut any potential developing leaf. Lastly, there is no need for a pole as this is not a climber. There are not issue if you are technically using it as a stake but in my opinion with the size of your plant, you should get something smaller so you do not have a need for such a big pot ☺️

Thank you!! This is the pot it came in and it had a lot more leaves when I got it. I will downsize & try that. Is semi hydro something they like?

I have one is soil and one in semi hydro! They both love it. Depending on the states of your roots, this is a transition you could consider if there isn’t much roots left. They lose the soil roots anyway during that transition ☺️
