The is a tropical plant of some sort but I’m not sure what exactly. It was thriving and looked really healthy until one day the leaves started becoming brown, dry, and crunchy. The moss on top of the soil has started to become brown as well. I’m not sure if I’m not watering it enough? But I don’t know what to do.?

That’s dieffenbachia, and it looks from the pic to have been overwatered, and by the algae, maybe too much humidity around the root ball which maybe why it’s holding water. I’d check the roots for rot and repot in fresh soil

Looks like a type of dieffenbachia or aglaonema to me. Either way, they don’t like to dry out - I water my dieffenbachia when it’s about halfway dry or else it gets all droopy. Both types are also better in lower light like a north facing window, so if your window gets a ton of direct light a day maybe that’s what’s making it sad too.
