Hello! Beginner plant person here. I keep getting a sort of light fuzzy white-grey mold on the top of my potting soil for some of my indoor plants. I recognise it is likely in part caused by overwatering but I’m trying to be more cognisant of how and how much I’m watering my plants and I have been watering them much less frequently (more to the recommended schedule of this app), but I feel like I’m facing the same problem still. I may try repotting them, but should I try a certain type to avoid this problem from reoccurring? What other ways should I alter my watering practices to fix this problem? I also have really hard water—even if that isn’t contributing to this specific issue, is that something I should try to change as well?

The watering schedule on this app is iffy at best. Get a water meter on Amazon or a chopstick. If chopstick is clean after poking into dirt, water. If soil on it, wait. The mold is from too much moisture. Not necessarily bad for plant, but annoying. Sprinkle with cinnamon or even neem oil spray. Humidity could be too high also. Fans moving air also helps.

Thank you! Should I replace the soil that is currently in the pots?

Tho answer your question about changing the soil; I don't think you have to unless you have root rot. Just stop watering until the soil is bone dry at least two inches deep and the mold will die. If it's really bothering you or your lungs (which happened with my plants) them that would be another reason to change soil.

I agree with the advice you have been given. Use the app schedule as a reminder to check the plants for watering and only water if necessary. You can snooze or skip the task depending on the need.
