General post here but I’m hoping to help some people out! I’m noticing a lot of people having issues with plants asking for help and when zooming in on the pictures I see a lot of times there’s possible spider mites so I want to offer some advice! Alocasias (Polly’s especially) are massive spider mite magnets, but spider mites don’t always leave webbing on the leaves, sometimes they’re just clusters of white dots or even white dots spread around on the leaves. They will kill your leaves and eventually the plant if not taken care of. If you suspect spider mites shower the leaves, spray with a mix of water and Castile soap every few days for a couple of weeks. (I measure with my heart but Google can give you actual measurements). The Castile sap has the right balance of fats to kill the spider mites and it’s very gentle on leaves if you use the unscented versions. I treat my plant room once every week or two in order to stop them because my alocasias keep attracting them. I also prefer a continuous spray bottle because it has a much finer mist that’s easier to get every crevice with. Little side note: For more delicate plants like orchids my advice might not be suitable. Common and more rare house plants are what I have and use this treatment on. Monsteras, trandscantias, stromanthe trio stars, pepperomias, philos, pothos, jade tree, begonias, etc etc.

Thank you for sharing this information! How would you treat orchids, especially jewel orchids with spider mites? I just noticed webbing on both of my jewel orchids but I assume I can’t shower them if I want to avoid crown rot.

Predatory mites would be a better option for delicate plants

Oh good question but I cannot help you with that. I am an orchid murderer unfortunately.

Great advice Josie, spider mites always move in when the inside air gets warmer and drier during winter 😬

Yes good point! They also can also float through the friggen air cause they are to tiny and light so they spread so easily.

great advice! i’ll add here that it’s important to know that the mites lay their eggs under the surface of the leaves so that’s why it’s critical to keep treating for a few weeks as josie indicated. stay vigilant until there are no signs!

Should be fine on the arrowhead, and I have a wandering Jew and it works great. Especially because if it were to get infested it would be ROUGH for me because mine is very long and quite bushy.

I’m pretty sure I have spider nights on my prayer plant. Would this be ok to use?
