Hi! I have this rattlesnake plant. All of a sudden it did this. I can’t even tell if it’s able to be saved. The plant has never shriveled before and I’ve had it for months and now it’s becoming crispy. Do you think this is dehydration? Or overwatering? Thank you! I water it when it when the soil is dry. I usually water until a tiny bit of water comes out the bottom. I do not fertilize it and it has a grow light which is on about 12-14 hours a day. I’ve done it this way for months, but I’ve noticed the soil is retaining less water? When I poor water it goes almost right through. Maybe it needs new soil?

    When do you water it (ie how do you decide)? What soil is it in? How much sunlight does it get? How much and with what do you fertilize it? All these details will help people give you better answers!

    Check the root system! She may need new soil, or she could be root bound. Is the soil right now soggy or crunchy? Crispy leaves can mean she’s not retaining water especially if the water is going through the pot too fast. Definitely check out the roots and maybe try bottom feeding her water when she’s re potted and feeling better. Also if the problem is the roots/ and or soil don’t throw out the dirt! You can bring back nutrients to the dirt by mixing it with fresh dirt and compost! :) good luck to you and your plant!! 🍀

    Sounds to me like she’s either root bound or the soil is hydrophobic. I’d probs refresh the soil with something a little bit more water retaining (I use an all purpose soil and add pearlite and some orchid bark). Mine also dried out like that but unfortunately I wasn’t able to save her. Hope yours is able to recover!

    As BigGrac said, sounds hydrophobic. But your watering technique has exacerbated or created the problem. Immediate fix is placing it in a bucket of water up to the pot rim. I would say at least an hour maybe more. The pot should feel heavy because soil is now saturated. Take it out of the bucket and let the excess water drain out for an hour or so. As for your regular watering, add water till a good amount comes out the drain. What’s happening is you aren’t adding enough moisture to wet the entire pot.

    Hi, Calathea grow from small rhizomes. Your leaves may be dead but your plant can still be saved. You can crumble that dirt up and dig up the rhizomes and with your old dirt, mix in some worm castings and bark then plant the rhizomes back in. Nursery soil is really easy to dry out and become hydrophobic and calathea hateeee that. It’s still saveable imo.
