Hi everyone! I’ve been dealing with thrips on my monstera since end of September. I’ve been spraying and wiping the leaves and stems with insecticidal soap. I’ve also given it a few cold rinses in the shower. But those thrips are still there. Definitely less, but I’d like to take my plant out of quarantine. If there’s one problematic leaf, I think it’s the middle one, which I see the most thrips on, however this middle stem also started sprouting a new leaf so overall it seems the plant is still doing well. Any advice what else I can do to get rid of the thrips but not harm the plant and hopefully save the new leaf and let it grow in? TIA! 🙏

I’d definitely cut off the leaf that has the most of them, thrips are like the roaches of the plant pests, they’re hard to kill lol. If you still want to go the natural route, I’d suggest maybe some diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the leaves and mixed into the soil (wear a particle mask though and eye protection) and water the plant with water and a splash of neem oil.

I was also thinking thrips are like the cockroaches of plant pests lol 🙈 Where would you suggest I get diatomaceous earth? I’ve heard about it but haven’t used it

Haha mhmmm, they’re a pain, I’ve seen some experienced plant YouTubers trash plants because they’re fed up with thrips lol. I got mine from Lowe’s, I’m sure it’s readily available pretty much at any garden/tool center

Get beneficial mites for the plant and nematodes for the soil would be my suggestion.

A systemic pesticide like bonide granules or sns 209 (I think there's a 214 for just thrips). Predatory bugs Amblyseius cucumeris is probably the most common, but they usually target young thrips. Anystis baccarum is more aggressive

Thanks for the advice! Where do you advise I get them from? I’m afraid about bringing more pests into my apartment, because I don’t like bugs enough to have them around, but I feel I might need the helpful ones to win this battle

NaturesGoodGuys, Nature's Control, Koppert, Arbico Organics(though they tend to be a bit pricey), Evergreen Growers Supply

The Evergreen growers has a lot of good infor. And you can pick the best ones for your pest, as well as your home as far as temp and humidity. Like some need certain warmth to actually procreate. The nice thing is once they eat everything they themselves will die back. So not like you're just infested.
