my roommate has this calathea plant and noticed this has been happening to its leaves, any ideas what caused it and how to fix it?

I can’t say for sure but looks like too much water, maybe.

A crispy leaf especially at the edges (idk I feel like it’s often more uniform in how the brown spots are distributed) generally means underwatering. Humidity and light and other things also play a role, though!
