HELP. Meet Rubes🐍🪴 (named after my step-dad’s grandma, Ruby, who was the first owner of this plant!) What’s wrong with Rubes? I just got it after my pawpaw passed, I think my family might have over watered it on accident before giving it to me, but maybe she needs more light? I’ve had her for almost a month and only watered her once myself. Obviously thinking she needs to be repotted, lol but I am scared to because this plant has been in the family for 100 years. HELP. I don’t want to mess up Rubes!! 2 tips are brown and 2 different leaves have these dry, brown spots. Xoxoxoxo.

    Snake plants like to be tight in their pots, but this one is definitely ready for a repot. Cactus, well draining soil would be a good option. Only put her in a pot 1-2” bigger than the root ball. Also, make sure you’ve had the plant for several weeks and allow to acclimate to your home before repotting. I think you’re right that she’s been overwatered. Snake plants want to dry out all the way before watering again. Although they can survive in low light, they will THRIVE in moderate lighting.

      Do I do anything about the leaves that are damaged or just leave them?

      I would start with just trimming the tips off the leaves that are yellow. It won’t grow anymore, but the leaves might not die all the way. The other one with brown spots, you could pull off when you’re repotting. Overall it looks healthy and they are pretty resilient. My best tip in terms of keeping it alive is that it’s easier to save an underwatered plant than an overwatered plant. Give it light and water when fully dry.

    if it’s in shade, i’d definitely recommend moving it somewhere it’ll get a little bit of sunlight, a few hours of direct light and indirect for the rest of the day is ideal. moderate lighting is where they thrive, like amie said. brighter light will help it recover from the overwatering since plants in higher light use more water daily than those in darker places.

    If you want to repot it and you’re very careful it’s unlikely you’ll kill it. First you just want to take it out of the pot, and kind of gently massage the roots to loosen them from their pot shape since they’ve grown around the walls of the pot. Be as gentle as you can, you are going to to break a ton of small roots but it’s fine if you’re gentle and not ripping roots out. Once you’ve loosened the root ball enough, you want to either 1. Place the roots floating slightly over the pot, over the 1/3 of snake plant soil you’ve hopefully placed, while a friend continues filling the pot with soil around and over the roots all the way up on the white parts of the plant you until you reach the green parts of the plant which is when you need to stop. Or 2. You put the soil all the way up but dig a deep hole and place your snake plant inside and then refill the hole with the soil and cover the roots all the way up on the white parts until you reach the normal, green parts. Once you’ve done that, you shouldn’t water it until the soil is dry (Which if you took the soil out of a closed bag then it should’ve been like 40% wet) enough time to avoid shock. Your finished product for both methods should be a snake plant with its roots fully covered and the plants thick roots covered so only the green parts show, above the soil. While the snake plant is recovering, don’t touch it prune it water it (Like I said above) don’t fertilize it and keep it in the same area it was before.
