Prayer Plant baddies SOS! I have this sick peacock plant that I cannot seem to heal. I started to repot it today for fear of root rot but I don’t smell or see any signs of it now that he’s out of the pot. What I do see are some very wrinkly, mushy tubers. I give this plant ample light and plenty of humidity and water it according to schedule so I’m kinda stumped as to what it needs to get better. Should I cut off the wrinkly tubers? Repot in new soil? Any advice would be immensely appreciated!

I could not find any information related to shriveling tubers. Since these are for water storage I will guess that it is either underwater so that the plant is drawing from the tuber or those tubers have somehow gotten damaged and cut off from the plant so they are shriveling. The mushy tubers are a sign of root rot so they should be removed. I would consider reevaluating my watering practices maybe "plenty of water" is too much for this plant.

Thank you for the prompt response! I think you’re right. I ended up washing and trimming some of the mushier tubers, soaking the whole plant in a hydrogen peroxide dilution, and then repotting it in new orchid soil with some cinnamon. Let’s pray all goes well 🙏

I recommend watering only when it needs it rather than using a strict schedule. Use the app watering schedule as a notification to check the soil.

I’ve been trying to find the perfect wording to explain this to people and this is it!! Thank you 😊

Exactly, I love the snooze feature that planta has.

Mm thank you for this! I do believe that the soil around this plant had become hydrophobic. It was always bone dry very soon after watering and when I would water it would pass straight through and drain out rapidly. Let’s hope this new soil will help and I’ll be sure to start using the scheduled watering reminders as an opportunity to just check the soil moisture.

I have a few and found out that the soil needs to be fairly dry before watering. Contrary to what I thought.

What beauties you have!!! I do believe the soil quality on mine had deteriorated and become hydrophobic as the soil was almost always dry and water would pass straight through and drain out. Hopefully this new soil will help retain moisture and I’ll try watering once it is on the drier side.
