What is going on with this Alocasia? It looked like it was going to bloom, then this strange thing grew out of the soil away from the plant. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think that's a corm! Its basically Alocasia seeds. I dont have an alocasia myself, but they do give seeds!

You are correct it is a corm. You can grow a new plant from it.

That strange thing is a corm. It's basically a baby version of that plant. It requires special care to grow so I suggest doing some research on it. If you leave it on the surface it will probably rot & you can't just replant it into same soil once detached. Plants use a lot of energy to bloom & grow corms. I suspect the plant traded the bloom for the corm. FYI-many Alocasia owners cut blooms as soon as they appear as they sap so much of the plant's energy. Hope that helps!!!
