Hey I just bought a ginseng ficus and once I brought it home I realized the base felt mushy. I took a look at the roots but I need another opinion. Does it have root rot?

Thank you so much, I’ll probably still break apart the root ball to make sure but this calmed by nerves 😊 thank you again!

You can’t check for root rot like that take all the dirt off and touch the roots if they are thin and break off easily then it has root rot.

Yeah, unfortunately I wasn’t able to take it apart fully at the moment and I wasn’t able hoping I’d be able to tell. It was so compacted and poorly potted in the grocery store that it just came out of the pot, so I decided to take a picture and ask while it was out. Thank you! 😊

If the roots are mushy rip off easily or smell bad then it has rot but it looks fine to me

Ok, thank you! Unfortunately I couldn’t break the soil apart then to check but I will soon. I haven’t had to deal with root rot just yet because I’m so paranoid about it, so I wanted to make sure. Thank you for the tips, I’ll use them to check! 😊

The base could feel mushy from a recent watering. It doesn’t look like rot. Looks like it needs to dry out before watering again. It doesn’t look bad. You can smell if it smells swampy which indicates it’s rotten in the middle. The leaves and stem will show signs of rot as well. I caution that tearing apart all the roots and soil will damage the plant. The impacts will be dying or yellowing leaves and stems in addition to the stress of acclimating to a new environment. I recommend putting it back in the original pot, letting it dry out and check for issues later.

Thank you so much for all the information, I made sure to immediately put it back in the pot. It came out unexpectedly so I took a picture while I could. I’ll continue letting it dry out. Thanks again! 😊
