We got this bird of paradise for free from someone who was getting rid of it. For a while it was losing all its leaves and the remaining leaves were curled, but we repotted it and took care of the root rot and now the remaining leaves are looking much happier. At the base are all the dried stem remains- should we keep those or take them off? I can’t find any birds of paradise online that look like this!

I had a bird of paradise that I purchased at IKEA several years ago. It got quite large and I ended up selling it. If you can gently trim off as much of the dead brown stalks, it would help it both aesthetically and physically. A couple of things I thought I would share are that the leaf curl is due to stress and as it’s growing, if the new leaves do not unfurl on their own, you can massage it with a warm damp cloth to help encourage it to open up. In the wild, they have rain and wind to help facilitate that.

What about issues with huge leaves that look super healthy but the heads are hanging low?

In my experience, that is probably due to low lighting.
