A friend gave me a monstera adansonii to take care of because it was dying, and it’s been doing well lately, lots of new growth and healthy leaves. I was looking at a new leaf today and noticed black thrips, so of course I panicked and then removed them one by one off all the leaves. I’m going to hose it down and then quarantine it. It’s not a horrible infestation but I am looking for some pesticide to treat it, does anyone have any recommendations?

Stroooong stuff. Lol You will also need to treat the soil as their eggs/larvae drip from the leaves into the soil (and spray won’t kill the eggs laid in the leaves). I use diatomaceous earth, but I’m sure others will have suggestions. You also want to treat 1x/5-7 days for at least 21 days to make sure you are getting them at every growth stages. I like to treat 2 more times after I’ve seen the last adult. They are horrible little creatures. Good luck!

Also, if your plant has been in close proximity to others I highly suggest treating them all. Thrips spread quickly and easily, so you will be chasing your tail.

Look for a spray that has thips listed as one of the specific pest it addresses.

With the diatomaceous earth, would I just sprinkle it all over the leaves and soil?

Get a spray bottle and fill it halfway with rubbing alcohol, add a few drops of dish soap, fill the rest of the way with water. This mixture will kill anything and exact measurements aren’t really necessary. I spray both sides of the plant and the top of the soil. Usually repeat once a week for three weeks and they are gone.
