the bottom leaves of my kalanchoe have been falling off slowly over the past few months. I wait to water until the leaves are not as firm, and then always check to make sure the soil is completely dry. it sits in an east facing window. any idea what might be happening?

It’s common for older, lower leaves of an older plant to naturally die off over time, but it’s possible it could be a root or soil issue, or want a brighter spot. Do you perhaps have a brighter window to try putting it in for a week, to see if it improves, or a grow light to try putting it under? Otherwise, if you’ve lost quite a few leaves, you might wanna check the roots. Hope this helps!

okay thank you for the advice! i’m going to take it out and maybe refresh the soil today. the soil is very hard, but the plant is only about a year old or so

Sounds good. The soil could be the problem if it’s really hard and remains so even after waterings. Old soil can become hydrophobic, so that’s why the app recommends to repot plants every 1-2 years. If there’s any signs of root rot, lemme know and I’d be happy to walk you through how to treat it. Hoping the roots are still nice and healthy🤞 (and if you do end up repotting it in fresh soil, I highly recommend Espoma’s organic. cactus and succulent mix.)

Oh! As a pro tip, if the soil seems cement like or very difficult to safely remove the roots from, soak the soil in room temp water for 30 minutes, then take it out and gently remove as much of the soil as you can. You can use a chopstick or wooden skewer to gently loosen the soil from the roots as well.
