Hello, I recently got a Stromanthe Triostar and it’s struggling. I am wondering if part of the issue might be that I need to add more soil? I didn’t want to cover up what I assume are new leaves so I left it kind of low. Any advice is much appreciated!

No advice, but this is on my wishlist. I hope she gets well soon!

Looks like it should be fine. Why do you say it is struggling? I have one. They grow rather quickly. Filling the pot with new shoots. They have similar care to Calatheas. I have a room humidifier running next to mine and it still has brown leaf tips.

I say struggling because mine’s not growing at all and it’s getting brown tips and yellowing of the leaves in other spots

Ok, gotcha. These plants are difficult. Each one seems to have its own needs. My general care for my calatheas is letting the soil dry out about 50% before watering. And they do not get direct sun but are under a grow light for about 16 hours a day. I do mist them but that’s for avoiding spider mites, not for humidity. The humidifier runs 24 hours a day. I do have them in a very chunky soil of orchid bark, perlite, succulent soil, and a small amount of charcoal. I fertilize according to Planta. One more thing, I give all my plants silica additive when I fertilize. That’s my routine. But please realize I have had trouble with a couple caltheas. Down to just a few leaves and then suddenly they are growing like crazy. I just don’t understand sometimes.

What does the silica do? I too once had only 1 tiny leaf on a Calathea but after figuring out I was overwatering, the plant has really bounced back. But it’s high maintenance plant

Are you referring to the two stubs that are on either side of the main stem? I do not think those are new leaves. They look more like leaves that were previously removed, at least that’s my experience with two stromanthe triostar. I have two of them. The one that is getting brighter light is growing more vigorously. Also they like humidity. I struggle with that so I get brown tips. My plants seem too like staying slightly moist.

Beautiful plant! Yes, unfortunately my kitten got to the plant and damaged those two bottom leaves beyond repair, so I snipped them in the hopes that the plant would focus more nutrients to growing new leaves

Yours looks fine. Just make sure to give it some humidity. This is what mine looks like. I don’t have a lot of humidity where i live so that’s why the leaves are browning

Beautiful! I’ll make sure it gets more humidity, thank you!
