Hey yall! I just received this plant (Lupita) from my uncles funeral last month and I don’t know what I’m doing. I didn’t water it until last week. After having it since Dec. 19. The leaves started to change after my watering!

That’s usually a sign of a watering issue. I would repot it in a chunky soil and water when it’s 75% dry.

Unfortunately, when you wait so long to water the roots dry out. So then when you go to water again, the roots start to decay and rot. I’d recommend repotting and getting on a Planta water and fertilizer schedule

hmmm, yeah bottled should be fine. i have a lucky bamboo that freaks out when i don’t give it filtered, which is why i thought that might be the problem. but bottled is filtered, so it must be something else!

This looks like a fragrant draecna and they are very forgiving. I don't like to be overly wet but they also don't like to be overly dry so you have to find a happy medium. I would say if you water when the soil is dry to about 2 in might be a good place to start. Is it the only plant in the pot or did it come as a combo planter? If it was a combo I would take the planter apart and separate the individual plants. You could wait until March or April to do this since it's the slow grow season now. I've had a striped draecena for many years. Got up to about 6 ft and even bloomed for me. I cut it down to about a foot, replanted a bunch of pieces and they all grew. Now it's 6 ft tall again. It does tend to lose lower leaves and I believe it's probably my choice of water source.

Yes it is the only pot, I did repot in a planter with a saucer. I didn’t water until it came out of the bottom of the pot, but will be sure to do that next time. I didn’t realize they get that tall. Also I’m in a basement with no to low light. Should I get a portable plant light?

Also, since you're new at this let me say a word about watering. You can never overwater but you can water too often. Make sure your pot has drainage, and when you water, water till it comes out the bottom of the pot. Let it drain well about 15 minutes before putting it back in its saucer. Never let it sit in a saucer of water. Then don't water it again until it's ready.
