If anybody has care advice on alocasias and colocasia’s , I would appreciate anything! My issue is this- every time a new leaf starts to come through, another older leaf drops . I know this is typical with them , but I believe it can be avoided if they’re just a bit happier . I have a handful of these plants but these are a few for reference . I have them in a chunky mix with the Fox Farm ocean floor soil, perlite, and orchid bark. They sit in clear plastic pots with drainage and trays . I’m careful about watering and usually follow the app but if they’re excessively dry I give them a light watering . I checked their roots recently when repotting them and all seemed healthy . No signs of pests either . Is there something I’m missing?

I believe that you’re right about the Alocasia cycling can be avoided. The thing that I noticed that I just wanted to check on is following the apps watering. I never just rely on the app. You might want to get a moisture meter and double check before watering. I’ve also heard there is also no benefit to light watering. If it’s time to water you should fully saturate the soil. Over watering isn’t that you’ve given the plants too much water but rather too soon. I’ve noticed with alocasias that they use more water when pushing out a new leaf. If it doesn’t have enough water to support both the old leaves and the new one, it’ll drop the oldest leaf.

Thank you sm! I’ll start using my moisture meter more and making sure they’re getting plenty of water :)

I think the plants look super healthy and fine. If you’re worried about the older leaves dropping for new ones might be because the plant wants to supply the new foliage rather the older foliage. Maybe an indication of overwatering or sunlight issues where it’s not getting enough photosynthesis. I’d say watch the watering and water when it starts getting dry. No problem with light watering. Just don’t fully drench the roots because sitting water is worse if the plant can’t soak it all up it will create root rot which blocks the oxygen for optimal growth. Also sunlight, give it some bright, indirect light.
