‼️ URGENT PLANT HELP NEEDED ‼️ Hello, this is my bonsai tree. I’ve not long brought it from a garden centre. I’ve watered it twice since purchasing. The leaves are very dry and crispy. If I touch one it can easily fall off. Any care tips and reasons why it’s doing this? Many thanks 🙏

Hi Ellie, A lot of plant problems have many possible causes. To narrow it down, it helps to add a lot more info. How long ago did you purchase it? How did you decide when to water it? (Tip: it should be based on whether the soil seems dry, not just based on time!) How much sunlight does it get? Is the soil dry (top couple inches of soil) right now?

Plants from a garden center have gone from a greenhouse with perfect humidity and light conditions, to a box store, to your home. Most plants will do badly at first. Dont do anything crazy and keep caring for it. It looks like a dramatic droop, not death.

Alot of those box stores overwater…was it soaking wet soil when you bought it? I’d check the roots and make sure they look ok

Check the roots for rot (this would likely have super wet soil while the leaves look dehydrated; dead roots can't drink no matter how wet the soil is.) Check to see if the soil if hydrophobic (you water it but it absorbs nothing. It usually looks compressed, and water goes around the soil instead of through it.) If it's niether of those, it's just dehydrated. If it's not rot, give it a nice long bottom-watering soak (I'd do anything from 1 hour to a full day.) Make sure it drains really well after the soak, and continue with normal care (if hydrophobic soil) or watering slightly more often (if dehydration)

If it is rot, trim away sick and dead roots, treat the roots with isopropyl alcohol, and repot in fresh soil, with better drainage than before (add perlite to your mix and make sure the pot drains properly.) Continue with regular care, being careful not to overwater. Time varies by species, but regrowing roots takes about four months for most

Just for clarification: is it a traditional bonsai jade plant? Does not look like it was. It could be another kind off plant cut into a bonsai (shape)
