Over the summer, my Mandevilla began losing her flowers and leaves… | Pests, diseases and problems | Planta-fellesskap

Surfside Seedling

Over the summer, my Mandevilla began losing her flowers and leaves without giving me any new growth, and it started staying wet longer than usual. She’s never been repotted, so I suspected that was the issue. To my surprise, my dad found a massive pot & took it upon himself to repot my plant… in garden soil… for in-ground plants. Not seeing the root system myself, I asked how it looked. He said the roots were white, but there was hardly soil left in the bucket. I know he just wanted something to keep busy with and do something nice, but I’m worried. That’s where you guys come in! Is there any hope for this gem? Should I cut it down? It did recently give me 2 blooms, so it’s still somewhat active. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 💚

The pot is way too big don’t cut from weak plants the cutting will most likely die I recommend repotting it either back to it’s original pot or buy a pot that’s 1-2 inches bigger then the roots. But I can tell from the stem of the plant that the pot is wayyy too big and the roots prob have rot. I like to dip the rotted roots in hydrogen peroxide and water. Don’t use too much hydrogen peroxide you can burn the roots.

I was thinking about taking a cutting, but I’ve never taken a cutting from this kind of plant. I’d have to learn how.

Make sure you use to right kind of soil too the soil that your dad used doesn’t have perlite which is why it’s staying wet longer. That dirt is prob best for like garden beds to grow fruit.

What’s worse is I sent my dad Amazon links to a pot the next size up & a cactus, palm & citrus soil before he did this. 😑🤦🏻‍♀️

I've used that in ground as the potting soil portion of my mix before, it's not an issue. The difference is a lot of "potting mix" has no soil, and this is mostly soil. But I would probably unpot her and mix in a bunch of ammendments, otherwise you may get root rot. Including some Mycorrhizal to help with the double transplant shock. They do go dormant, not sure what you're weather is... looks sunny still. With my viners that go dormant in drastically cut them back. Like only a few inches, but for one that size probably 8" or so. Then overwinter it in a cold/not freezing area of the house or garage. Unless you're in a non-freezing area, than you could leave it out.

I’m out of all my potting mixes. I have some perlite left, but not nearly enough. Santa’s comin’ though, so hope he brings me some dirt at least. 😂 I’m in FL, so she’ll be alright outside for the most part if she can stick this out. I’ll consider giving her a chop.

I mean he has a sleigh, sleigh over some potting ammendments 🎅. Oh yea she should be good then. I would still trim her back at some point, you'll get better growth in the spring. It's slightly traumatizing. I do it on my honeysuckle and a cringe at every snip

I don’t think the pot is too big. If it came out of that bucket and he said it was mostly roots, i think the new pot is a good size. The problem is lack of the amendments that wolfen referenced. I agree with the cut back, too, I think it’s necessary even though it will make you cringe.

Thank you! I agree the soil is the issue. I was worried the pot was too big at first (12” bucket to 19” pot - obviously a little more than a 1”-2” upsize), but it ended up being the best option. & omg, yes! Just thinking of it gives me heebie jeebies! Now, question: Before I chop, is it necessary for the plant to have leaves left on it? Because I’ve lost a lot of those seen lower on the vine. Majority would end up cut off.

Probably not necessary to have leaves but I’m not an expert on this plant so double check
