No green thumb

Can this plant be saved? My grandma gifted me this piece of plant from her own. It was nice and green until I planted it in soil. She told me not to water it too after but it stared yellowing and now after a week of no water it’s looking quite bad. Thoughts?

😔 was it a water prop? If so you actually want to water slightly more often at first, because they are used to being in water. I'd get another from her, and keep it in water prop in your house for a bit, so it acclimate to your conditions, then try potting it up. Water really well, so it's soaked for a day or two, then back off watering to a normal schedule

Cuttings should be kept moist, but it’s okay. You can try again! 💚

Start props in small pots slightly bigger than the root lengths. I recommend a 4” wide or smaller pot if you start with a new cutting. I agree that this one is too far gone. You should soak the entire soil when watering. Let the water flow through and freely run out the drainage holes to ensure all the roots get water. Your photo shows spot watering. The dry soil will pull/wick moisture away from the roots in this case. Water it outside or over a bucket if you live in an apartment. I don’t advise watering in a sink or tub unless you can prevent potting soil from clogging the drain. 🍀🪴

I just want to add Zz props are a bit different from standard props because in order for them to be successful they should have a rhizome started at the base of the cutting. Forming this as a water prop takes a reeeeally long time— months in some cases. The quickest way to prop a Zz is to split it (like you would a hosta or a glad or daffodil outdoors) — dig up a rhizome and pot it
