Hi all! Took a look at my Krimson Princess Hoya today and I noticed all those spots. They rub off easily with my finger. My first thought was a pest of some sort, but I dot see anything that looks bug like or 3D at all - just these splotches. They are all over and I didn’t notice them any other day this week when I’ve been looking at all of my plants. Thoughts?

Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects that produce a white, cotton-like or waxy coating. Move the affected plant away from others to prevent spreading, and treat it using Dawn dish soap with water.

I thought it was normal and have never tried rubbing it off 😬 (I’ve seen it on a lot of other peoples krimsons) It never “spread” and new leaves developed it over time. It, like, grew with the leaf. ETA: I have a krimson princess and krimson queen. They’re my only plants with it. I don’t think it’s mealies, I have battled those separately.

Those look like mealybugs to me! Not good! I’ve lost two plants to mealybugs!

White substances that appear on the leaves and grows with it is likely guttation as Wolfen suggested. The sap of hoyas is milky white and can crystallize on the plant. Sap can build up on the leaf cells when the plant pushes out excess minerals with the sap. It’s normal. Just clean off with a vinegar water solution. A dusty powdery substance that quickly spreads could be powdery mildew, a fungus. Treat with a commercial fungicide. 🪴🍀

Is it part of the leaf? When you lightly scratch it or rub it does it go away but come back later? It looks like it’s just the splash that some Hoya have. It’s caused by starch trapped under the leaf or something. I don’t remember. Some Hoya are covered for their splash
