My jade plant is happy and growing big ! I'm so proud of her. I only just now realized that her leaves seem kind of flat. Aren't they supposed to thick and plump ? Is this normal ? Any tips ?

    The leaves can get thin and flat when it’s thirsty or getting rootbound, and taking less time to dry out between waterings. Not a serious sign of distress, but rather a good indicator to check the roots and see if it needs some fresh soil to cover new roots, or a slightly larger pot; or that she simply would like a good drink sometime soon. If the roots look like they’ve got plenty of room to grow, then consider giving it a really good watering and letting all the water run through the drainage holes. The only thing I’d consider as a cause for some concern would be if the plant isn’t rootbound, and you’ve watered it recently, but the leaves haven’t refilled from the watering yet. If that’s the case, then your plant might be telling you that its soil has aged and become somewhat hydrophobic, so it’s not properly absorbing the water for your plant. I’ve found the soil can become hydrophobic and compacted sooner with jades than my other plants. If you’ve found it’s been like this for a while despite frequent waterings, I’d gently remove as much soil as you can, cover any exposed roots in Bonide’s Rooting Powder, then replace the old soil with a fresh cactus mix. I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for mine. (And please avoid Miracle Grow’s soils for this one. Not well-draining enough) Hope this helps 😊

      I repotted her in June 2025, so almost a year ago. Today I checked to see if any roots were coming out of the plastic pot, and none are visible. Roots on the top are fine too, nicely covered. She's never had plump leaves. I water when she's about 85-90% dry (every 2 weeks ish). Is that not enough ?

      That’s pretty frequent for a jade. I wait at least 16-18 for my smallest one, which is the same variety as yours. It might sound a little nuts that she might need new soil already, but I’m serious about their soil becoming hydrophobic faster than other plants. I usually have to replace the soil at least once a year with my jades. From the looks of it and sound of how you’re caring for it, the fact that it’s not showing signs of overwatering or being fully saturated from being watered definitely suggests the soil is hydrophobic, so I’d recommend replacing as much of it as you can. Might sound a little scary to fool with the roots, but jades are typically very hardy with even the most aggressive repottings. If you want to be extra careful with the roots, cover them in rooting powder after you remove the old soil and BEFORE you replace it with new soil, and wait 1-2 days before watering it to let everything settle and for the powder to help with any potential shock. The powder will also help it grow new roots. I get mine from any Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart, or Ace Hardware. All my local nurseries sell it too.
