What the heck happened to my spider plant. It was fine two days ago and all of a sudden. The leaves are super soft and not crunchy … I was getting full sunlight.

It looks like it was overwatered. Does your pot have drainage? Were the roots sitting in water for a while?

Yes, there are drainage holes. I just checked roots and all the roots are healthy. It was never sitting in water

The soil was slightly damp near the bottom.

I think it either got too much sun or I over fertilized it. I move it away from the window sill and I’m just going to ignore it for a while and hope it’s okay.

i think it could be the light — full sun is too much for spiders and your soil doesn’t look too wet (perhaps a bit too dry although i see you said there was moisture at the bottom)

Yea trimmed away the dead stuff and moved it further from the window! It should be fine because I know spider plants can recover easily

My spider plant has preferred smaller than larger pots because its root system is seemingly shallow. I have it in a small diameter pot but the depth is a lot. Never roots past about 1/3 of the way down. Only about an hour of semi-full sun in the morning. The bottom of your soil may be wet but if the roots aren’t hitting it being such a small plant it may not be getting enough water on top of too much sun!! Hope she recovers 🥹

These houseplants can be difficult to figure out.

I’ll add my two cents. I agree with too much light unless it’s early morning or late evening light. The black edges looked scorched. I agree there’s a soil and pot size issue if the bottom is wet and the top has dry cracks. The pot is larger than needed for that size spider plant. Spider plants like a snug fit as it grows. They can live in small 3” starter pot for months like the one in my photo. The soil can be standard potting mix with lots of aggravates like perlite/lava rocks/sharp sand to provide good drainage. Watering becomes easier when the pot is sized properly and the soil drains water well. Just water when it needs it. The thick finger like roots hold more water than typical plants.

The pots not that big at all…So I need to find an even smaller one?

The plant has to use up all the water in the soil or the roots will have “wet feet” which leads to root rot. The little plant can’t do it unless you can determine the exact amount of water to put in the soil. It’s not easy to do. Also, most of the leaves are dead or dying. Only 3 tiny leaves are left. That can’t hold much water. Check the roots again. They may die back as well. It’s another reason for a smaller pot.

Overwatering. Spiders like to be humid, but don’t like too much water to the roots. The watering it around once every 1-2 weeks 🌱🌱

Well she’s dead. The base of the leaves is black now and she’s falling over due to the black base.
