I have been using this app for 2 years and just found out today that my Calathea is sensitive to lime in water. It was purchased from a nursery last year and was so beautiful. Slowly it started having dried up and curled leaves. I kept treating it with a fungicide, watering and fertilizing on schedule. It finally got down to one leaf and I almost threw it away, but I kept watering and feeding. Lo, and behold it started growing again and the leaves are big. I see the dreaded dry and curled leaf starting again and believe it’s lime from the water. John, my plant, will be getting distilled water from now on.

Beautiful fussy plants. I have two of those spoiled brats, but I have them under control usually. I use RO water for all my plants.

Thank you for your comment. I did not know what RO water was and just spent the last 30 minutes reading an excellent piece all about it.

They can be very dramatic at times. I notice mine are the most dramatic with droopy leaves whenever I didn’t water them for a day longer than I was supposed to. Distilled water is the way to go with these babies for sure! I recommend using it for begonias too.

I use rain water, mine always suffer in the winter even though they are near a humidifier. Calatheas are beautiful but 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ they always thrive for me in the summer outside though!

Same thing happened to my calathea.. crisped leaves and just a stem left. Too much lime. I hope to save my stem of a plant with humidity and distilled water. Who knew!

Yes keep loving it and don’t give up on it. Water, fertilize and spray with distilled water. It will come back.

Just discovered one of my plants (Bruce, a blue spruce) is also sensitive to lime thanks to this post!! Do you have to re-pot them before starting to give them the fancy lime-less water?? Thanks for posting about this!!

I would think new soil is quicker to help it recover, although it is still a process. I repotted my Calathea when I made this post.
