Hi Everyone, I’m a fairly new plant mom and today I noticed some bugs in my two pothos. I got both two weeks and placed them in my living room along a south wall, so they get indirect light from the north facing windows. Both have chunky soil. They have these tiny white-ish bugs and some other brown-ish centipede-looking bugs crawling in the soil. I hadn’t watered them in the last two weeks because the soil was moist (not sure if that’s a placement issue and/or if that’s contributing to the bug problem). Anyone know what might be happening with my pothos and/or how to get rid of the bugs? 🪴

    The “centipede thing” is likely a greenhouse millipede. Generally harmless but they are kinda scary lookin. They get there name bc they hitch rides off planter plants in big growing facilities. The white ones I’d need more info… could be a few things. What to do: Get some neem oil (organic all purpose pesticide) Watch a YouTube vid how to mix it in a spray bottle then drown that thing. Neem oil is kind of a cure all for pest related problems!

    the little white ones are springtails. completely normal and harmless, though if they're visible at the top of the soil for quite a while after watering, that may be a sign of overwatering and possible root rot. the brown bugs are probably actually garden millipedes, and are also harmless. both feed on decaying organic matter in the soil, so if they become excessive, i would check for root rot.

      If there is root rot, would I have to throw out the plant or just take out the parts that are not healthy? Also, would changing soil help with managing the moisture a little better?

      yes! fresh soil with more amendments (more perlite and orchid bark, find an aroid mix if you can) will absolutely help with the moisture problem. for root rot, you can trim off any mushy or smelly roots and treat with diluted hydrogen peroxide, then put into new soil.
