I have a bunch of succulents, and I put them all together thinking it would be better. I always throw my scraps in there for compost or maybe propagation. What should I do to help them in the middle of winter? I live in Illinois. The container has a detachable bottom which i sometimes take off and refill with water because some of the roots are hanging out. What should I do to keep them alive? Can I chop the dead stems off? Should I keep throwing my scraps in here or for possible propagation or nothing? Should I get a different container, if so now or what season? Should I add more soil? Should I let the roots hang out underneath in the water?

You can trim dead stuff, I wouldn’t add water to the tray or you might get some root rot. I’m watering about once a month right now with a bit of fertilizer (fertilizer isn’t super necessary). I like to wait to repot my succulents in the spring with a really well draining cactus mix. I might not use it as a dumping ground or you might get some pests if you accidentally put an infected leaf in.

Okay Thanks! I was also thinking I should wait until spring.

If these were tropical. Bottom water away. But being succulents, like Kades said they don't need that much water and it can lead to rot or the plants being limp and squishy. If you want to throw in off cuts to propogate that should be fine. But food scraps or actual dead leaves have zero benefit in a potted plants. The only scraps that would be semi usable as is (read.. not composted first) would be something like orange peels, but succulents don't call for a ton of nitrogen, so I wouldn't over do it
