I recently got a monstera plant from another tenant in my apartment complex and I noticed that at the base of one of the stalks it was almost black and wrinkled and there were tiny white bugs crawling specifically in that area at the soil. I removed this stalk (it pulled right out) and was wondering if anyone has tips of how to get rid of the bugs so they don’t infect the rest of the plant?

Well I would do normal things like check the stalks for bugs use neem oil (I’m pretty sure you have spider mites ) or a plant wipe with neem oil in it to get rid of them I would keep checking till you know they are gone

Depending on what they look like, you could also potentially have mealy bugs or just gnat larvae if they were just in the soil. As for the black, it sounds like rot which would make sense why there’s gnats if your soil is too moist. I can also see some yellowing on the leaves which is a good indicator too. They most likely watered too frequently and didn’t let the soil and roots dry out between waterings. I would unpot, make an assessment of the roots (maybe look up videos of monstera roots to know what you’re looking for as far as root rot) and give it new soil. Also treat for pests just in case there’s others. Also make sure that pot has drainage and it isn’t sitting in a puddle of water. Good luck! 👍🏼
