Ahhhhh!!!! This plant arrived in the mail almost a week ago and I spotted this today 😭😭😭 I know it’s a mealy bug but I’ve never actually dealt with them before. I wiped it off with a q-tip and neem oil/soap spray, sprayed the rest of the plant, placed in a bag to quarantine. What else should I do? Do I need to change soil? Should I treat the other 2 plants that arrived with it too? I don’t want these to spread to my other plant babies!

Nooo! That sucks with new plants. Yeah I would treat all of them the same way, also give them a good shower down the next time they need water and before you do put this stuff into the soil, it’ll kill those suckers for good because it not only kills the adults but the larvae in the soil

Is this the same thing people use to treat fungus gnats?

It could be, this treats mealy bugs, thrips, aphids and the like. Fungus gnats are more killed by nematodes being watered in instead

many people do recommend this for fungus gnats unfortunately, but a gnat problem is usually caused by soil that’s too dense and heavy on organic matter (like plain potting soil) and/or a tendency to overwater. the granules will only hide the problem by eliminating the bugs, so it’s better to treat gnats first by adjusting your soil and watering habits.

Use Mosquito Bits or similar which contains Bti, a beneficial bacteria that destroys fungus gnats larvae in the soil. No larvae means no pesky flying adults.

please read the warning labels on systemic granules before purchasing and using them. they’re very toxic and can be detrimental to your health if applied to houseplants even with proper protection as you will be exposed to the chemical every time you are near your plants’ soil. i would recommend an isopropyl alcohol solution sprayed over the leaves every few days for 6-8 weeks or until the bugs are gone.

I came here to say that! Bonide should be avoided for houseplants because it has chemicals that cause lung cancer. Read the EPA warnings per the caution labels. You need protective equipment like masks and gloves to apply this. Then, you have it indoors with family and pets inhaling carcinogens. Dabbing and wiping with non toxic solutions is better.
