Hello. I got this umbrella tree 2-3 weeks ago and thought it was a cultivar, but now that I am learning more, I think the spots are an indication of a problem? First of all, Planta ID’d it as an Octopus tree. Is that right? Second, the brown dots are not “on” the leaf, but rather in it (if that makes sense), and I don’t see any thrips or other pests. It does seem the longer I own it, the less dotted leaves I am getting but it has dropped quite a few after the repot. It seems to be stabilizing now though. Any help would be appreciated. PS: I show the underside of the leaves in an image. There is a different brown spot there, but that is not what I am showing.

Weirdly, Google says these can either be called octopus trees or Australian umbrella trees. I thought umbrella trees were totally different 😅 I can’t find anything abt the spots, though. It could be sunburn from too much direct light.

Hi. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you on this. Yeah I thought it was a weird umbrella tree and I asked the nursery owner about it and they said they were sent in with their shipment of assorted scheffleras. The funny thing was I mentioned the spots to her and said it was really cool looking and she didn’t say anything about it being a disease or a problem so makes me wonder how much that nursery knows about things. I guess it used to be Schefflera actinopylla, but recently got reclassified to Heptapleurum actinophyllum, so not a true Schefflera anymore? 🤷
