I’ve had this Fern for about a year and it’s been super healthy but after I sprayed alcohol on it to get rid of mealy bugs, these brown spots started spreading through most of the leaves. What is it and how do I help the plant thrive again?

It seems your friend’s fern, which looks like a Bird's Nest Fern (*Asplenium nidus*), has developed brown spots after being sprayed with alcohol to eliminate mealy bugs. Here's what's likely happening and how to help the plant recover: ### Cause: - **Alcohol Damage:** The brown spots are likely a result of damage from the alcohol spray. Bird's Nest Ferns have delicate leaves that can be sensitive to harsh chemicals. Alcohol, even when diluted, can cause leaf burn or spots, especially if applied in direct sunlight or not rinsed off afterward. ### How to Help the Fern Thrive Again: 1. **Prune Damaged Leaves:** Gently trim away the worst affected leaves. Use clean, sharp scissors to cut the leaves close to the base. This will help the plant redirect its energy to producing new, healthy fronds. 2. **Rinse the Plant:** Gently rinse the entire plant with lukewarm water to remove any residual alcohol or potential pests. Be careful not to overwater the soil while doing this. 3. **Adjust Light Conditions:** Make sure the fern is in indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, which can worsen the leaf burn. 4. **Increase Humidity:** Bird’s Nest Ferns thrive in high humidity. Consider placing a humidifier nearby or misting the plant with water (but not too frequently, as it can encourage mold). 5. **Regular Care:** - **Watering:** Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. - **Avoid Chemicals:** Avoid using harsh chemicals on this fern in the future. If pests return, try using a more gentle solution like diluted neem oil or simply wiping them off with a damp cloth. - **Fertilizing:** Use a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season to encourage new growth. ### Preventive Measures: - **Test Treatments First:** Always test any pest treatment on a small part of the plant before applying it all over, especially with delicate plants. - **Regular Inspection:** Regularly inspect the plant for pests so you can catch infestations early and avoid heavy chemical treatments. By following these steps, your friend can help the Bird's Nest Fern recover and return to its healthy state. New growth will replace the damaged leaves over time.
