I bought a big ZZ plant about 3 weeks ago, repotted it because it was busting out of the pot (literally - it was split), and watered it. I added the grow light two weeks later, because it’s a dark corner. The soil has stayed quite wet and the smaller stalks are losing their leaves. I’m not sure if it’s transplant shock or something worse. Any advice? I’m just leaving it to dry out for now.

What kind of soil did you use when you repot it?

Potting soil with added perlite :)

I would repot it with even more perlite or any additives that improve drainage/add air pockets (sand, pumice, lava rocks, even leca). I typically don’t recommend repotting again so soon, but I’ve found that ZZs are VERY sensitive to staying wet. They really want to be able to dry out

Thanks! I’ll pick up some extra drainage and repot asap.

Great advice from Mullein! Exactly why I asked what you’d repotted in. My zz is in a more cactus like substrate very little soil with a lot of pumice, perlite and sand.

Awesome. Sending growing vibes to your ZZ! They really are wonderful low-maintenance plants once soil type and watering is dialed in

I repotted today and lost a lot of roots and one rhizome to rot. Still plenty of healthy roots and rhizomes, though. Hopefully the new medium will keep it drier and happier.
