Bought this huge 5 foot tall dragon tail on OfferUp from an owner of a nursery in Tacoma called Sunny’s for $270. The picture in the ad was perfect. I had to pick it up at night from his home and couldn’t examine it very well in the dark. Also, he said he owned Sunny’s, and said this was the shop plant and they didn’t have room for it there anymore, so I thought I was safe not being able to examine it closely. Got it home and shocked at the condition it was in. It was badly damaged and in poor health from being neglected, underwatered and underfed. All the new growth tips are damaged. And nearly every leaf was damaged with brown tips and bites out of the leaves like from beetles or caterpillars. I contacted Ryan from Sunny’s through the OfferUp app to see if I could bring it back and get my money back since the picture in the ad did not match the plant I got. He said no. Offered me $50 and told me he didn’t even have to give me that. All sales final. So now I’m stuck with this thing. Anyhow, the backs of all the leaves except the newest ones have all these brown bumpy spots on them. What is it? Do I need to worry? The second photo is the one from the OfferUp ad. The next is the plant as received. The next is the plant after repotting and attaching to a new trellis. I think I know why he sold this through OfferUp and not his store though. 🙄

I did but not before he deactivated his OfferUp account. I also blocked him just in case he reactivates it.

That’s terrible! My two rhaphidorphas turn yellow real quick if there is too much water!

Well first things first… I would check the soil and possibly repot. Normally you want the plant to acclimate first but if it’s dying then you gotta repot. Second, I would confirm the pot size it would need. Third I would make sure it’s separate from all your other plants and wipe down every leaf with neem oil. I would leave it be after that and see what happens. I’m sorry that happened to you! Can we get a picture of the full plant to see the extent of the damage.

I have repotted and pruned the tree and cleaned all the leaves. I’m spraying it today thoroughly with insecticidal soap. I also was advised to get it mounted on a better trellis so it could all get light and air. So now we leave it be and wait for it to grow. I hope it makes it. I will add some pictures to the post.

It’s hard to see in the photos but hopefully you get the idea. I have more closeup photos that show more details of the damage. I couldn’t figure out how to attach them all. Here’s one.
