Hey everybody, I’ve just noticed the base of my asparagus fern has quite a few webs. I can’t see anything crawling around and the plant itself is healthy. Do we think this is a general spider or spider mites or something of the sort? Many thanks,

The web looks like it’s from a common spider. I don’t see spider mites in the photos. The white stuff is mold/fungus. It’s common in potting soil that has lots of organic matter. It grows when the soil is overwatered, has poor drainage, and has poor air circulation. Nurseries usually bake out their potting soil to rid it of pests, seeds and fungus. You can use a fungicide to get rid of it. You will need to control the moisture and provide good air circulation.

Thank you for your thoughts Sunny. A fungus makes sense as this plant had previously been lower in its draining pot, so no light was getting to the soil. Perfect breeding ground! Many thanks.
