Spider plant people, help? I just groomed all the dead leaves out of this baby. These 3 fluffy babies were crammed into a 4” pot. I put them into a 12” pot. The watering sked planta has us on- the soil is dry to the bottom. Do they really like this dry? I wonder if it shouldn’t be in a more humid room?? Or maybe she’s too close to the grow light?

I have Bonnie curly spider plants too! They are easy care plants given sufficient light, fertilizer and water. Repotting was the right thing to do. But, the upgrade should usually be to a bigger pot about 2 inches wider or less. Too large of a pot means the plant can’t remove most of the water from the soil. Continuously wet soil leads to mold, mildew, fungus, bacterial issues and root rot. It’s a potential breeding ground for insect larva. You may have to reduce the pot size if you see any of the previously mentioned issues. Spider plants can take most or all of its soil drying out because the roots are thick, fleshy and hold a lot of water. You know the plant dries out too much when the leaf tips turn brown.

Being pot bound is usually not an issue for spider plants. A crowded pot gives fullness to the plant. My curly Bonnie plant has about 20-25 individual plants in a 6 inch pot. The plant is about 2 feet wide. It’s so dense that spider babies get stuck trying to emerge making the vines the babies are on grow into a spiral. The soil is fast draining coconut husk, perlite and a little dirt. I water every 3 days in cooler months.
