My plants seem to have suddenly gotten infected with something white. Not sure what it is but my hibiscus plant is headed for death. It seems like other plants on my patio have gotten the same thing. I have lost one of my plants to this already. Help! I don’t want to lose the rest of the family!

I don’t know about Hibiscus but we get a lot of white issues up here on roses & Hydrangea. Have you already tried Copper soap? Or neem oil? Can you tell if it’s fungal or insect?

I can’t tell if it’s bugs or fungus. All I know is that it’s spreading fast

It’s a mealybugs infestation! They are sucking the sap from your plants and will eventually kill them. Isolate the infected plants. Mix a solution of 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 quart water and 1 tablespoon Dawn dishwashing liquid. Spray the entire plant, the soil, under leaves and under the pot. Wash down the patio area with soapy dishwater. Treat all nearby and infected plants once a week until the bugs are gone. It can take several weeks. Disinfect your hands and tools to avoid spreading the bugs. Carefully, dispose of the dead leaves or they will spread the infestation. They are tenacious! Typically, dabbing a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on them is enough if you only have a few. Good luck.

I think I have a massive infestation then. Thanks so much for helping me identify what this is. It’s taken out several plants and I don’t want the rest of my patio to go with it. How do you prevent them from coming back?

I don’t know of a preventative for mealybugs. I brought some home on a new plant along with spider mites. They spread to 5 plants before I realized it. Took me over a month of spraying with soapy water once or twice a week to get rid of them. I spray my plants with soapy water about every 4-6 weeks to clean them since most live outside. I have not had a problem with them since then.
