ADVICE needed! Pilea Peperomioides Friendship Plant ~ Leaf Damage ~ I’m very new to plants and recently brought home my first two Friendship plants. They were in small Terracotta pots and needed a new home so I transplanted them a few days ago. The one I transplanted first is showing these strange, dark patches in the leaves. I’m thinking I was too rough trying to get the dirt out of their roots and didn’t take enough care to protect her leaves? I also sprayed her with All Seasons Horticultural Spray Oil- could that be the culprit? The directions only said spray all over- but didn’t specify anything about diluting so I figured I didn’t have to? My Money Plant was sprayed with the same thing and does not show these injuries. What do these discolorations on her leaves look like to you? Anything I can/should do? I transplanted the other Pilea today, did not mess with the roots much to try and get the old dirt off. I just moved it to the other pot trying to avoid being rough. I did not spray the oil onto it either for fear it was the reason the leaves are discolored. I want to learn from this while also trying to heal my new plant. I’ve not had her long, but the spots are new.

You sprayed the oil because the plant has pests?

I sprayed the oil as a preventative measure since they are new to me. I have not seen any pests nor evidence of pests currently.

Ok. Then, we can rule out pests.

Yea I definitely didn’t think it was a high chance for that problem specifically. Thank you!

looks like it could be mechanical damage, “bruises” on the leaf

I believe so as well. Doing lots of research on how Pilea leaves look based on different issues- it did not appear to be anything that resembled those issues. I just think I was a little too rough. 😢 Lesson learned, I’ll continue on as normal and keep an eye on her. Any leaves she decides she doesn’t want to repair/keep I’ll prune away and hopefully she’ll be just fine after that! Thank you for your help!

This plant is kinda a drama queen as stated it does look like mechanical trauma like a bruise most cases is just let it be if the plant wants to kill off the leaf it will for the most part just focus on appropriate watering and lighting

Thank you so much Zan! I agree with you and other comments stating this is likely mechanical damage. I feel baaad 🥺 Sorry Pilea. The poor leaves! Haha Well lesson learned- I will do just what you suggested. Leave her alone and let her choose what is worth keeping/letting go. I’ll prune back what she decides she doesn’t want to keep. I appreciate the drama queen comment. I think she has finally found her name. Her name is Drama and her friend will be Diva. They’ve been so much fun so far- minus learning this lesson. Love having the name find the plant. 😝
