I’ve had this plant for a little while now and it was doing great. It started growing new buds and growing taller but now it’s yellowing and getting squishy. I use to have three stalks but had to remove one since it got too squishy. Does anyone know what’s wrong? Am I able to save this or should I send him to the graveyard 🪦 I really have been trying to save the little guy especially since he’s been trying to grow new friends.

You should only water around once a month, so if you’ve been watering more than that, it’s likely overwatering. Additionally, you should never water when the lithops is splitting.

And it’s normal for the old ‘leaves’ to die back when the new ones emerge.

I agree with Anya about watering once a month. A “little” more explanation, they only have two leaves at a time. They put on new leaves annually. When they are forming the new leaves, the plant pulls the resources (water and nutrients) from the old leave to redirect to the new ones. In the process, the old leaves wither. A totally natural process so don’t fight it. This is what’s happening with the shorter plant. Don’t water it while it’s forming new leaves. If you do, the plant collapses pretty dramatically into a mushy mess within a day. If I see wrinkling, I find it’s best to wait a month and see if any new leaves start peeking out. If not then I water and cross my fingers. You can anticipate their watering needs based on the time of year. Typically they are dormant during the summer and winter so they won’t need much water if any. Deep water in spring before leaves form. Withhold water wile leaves are forming. Resume water in fall when they start to wake back up. These are short plants with very little or no profile above the soil so I suspect the tall one is stretching. They want sun. All the sun. All the time. Unless it’s super hot. I cooked mine a few years ago. I love these guys but they are the puzzle box of the plant world. They are challenging and have stumped plenty of people. I’m still trying (which you should read as “take all this with a grain of salt and research because who knows if I know what I’m talking about”). Good luck!

I also have a quick question that’s a little off topic. Do you think they should be buried deeper into the soil? Im unsure if they should be that far out or if I should have them buried closer to the top.

I’d leave them be for now.

With lithops you shouldn’t water them until fall
