I got this Geogenanthus Ciliatus about a year ago for my birthday and at first it was extremely happy. Then it started losing it’s leaves in the winter (perhaps needs more light). I thought it was a goner but a new leaf just sprouted. Any idea what’s causing its sickness?? It receives moderate indirect light.

Ahhh, the will to live! It’s an understory plant which means the it stays under the main canopy. This is a cool rare plant! It looks like it’s been habitually dry. Never allow it to completely dry out. It’ll om nom that moisture right up. Checklist— Low to medium indirect light, but prefers the dimmer.. Soil pH of 6.1-7.3 which is more acidic than usual mixes (I’ve heard people use African violet mix), but otherwise it’s not uber picky and can live in any of them, just don’t overfertilize. Never let it dry out completely, Well draining potting mix, It actually prefers dimmer light, like dappled sunlight, LOVES humidity. Like, 60-90%. During day 60-90 and 70-90 at night

Ah thank you! Maybe my issue is that I have it in a non-draining pot so I’m more hesitant to over water…I guess I can try to repot though it’s already struggling. Thoughts?

I have a diamond drill bit that I use to drill holes in the pots my plants come in if they don’t already have drainage holes. You can find them pretty cheap on Amazon, and tutorials for drilling holes without breaking ceramics, terracotta, and glass are on Pinterest and YouTube. ☺️

I don’t know why they even make non draining pots. Uuuuf did I lose many a friend to those before realizing that it just shouldn’t be done. I tend to take the grower pots they come in and I slice out 5-6 equal slashes on top of the bottom holes. Many pots that don’t have the drainage holes will have an indented circle or an x where they should be. You can typically cut one out with scissors or something sharp.

But your question was about HYDRATION.. now, I haven’t test this, but I’ve heard interesting things about Orbeez/water beads. May be worth checking out?
