I finally managed to get my hands on a silver sword philodendron a few weeks ago and considering I’ve wanted one for the longest, I quickly fell in love with it. Shortly after bringing it home though, these weird spots began showing up on the leaves. I’ve been careful not to overwater it, kept it close to a west facing window and regularly treated the leaves with a spray. But yesterday, after losing multiple leaves, I made the difficult decision to remove any that looked diseased to stop any kind of spread. This plant is one of my favorites, so I would hate to see it die. Everything I’ve read seems to indicate leaf spot disease, which I’ve never dealt with before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Oh sorry about your plant! I’m curious about what you have been spraying the leaves with, and I was also wondering if you have checked the soil? 😊 + if you measure the spot with the light meter, what does it say? 🤗🪴

The spray I used was a natural fungicide/insecticide I believe but I can’t recall the name of it and I also check the soil regularly to make sure I don’t overwater it! In terms of the light meter, it’s part sun/part shade. Thank you so much for reaching out :)

Philodendrons are known to excrete extra water through their leaves. It kind of looks like your photo. Usually this happens when they’re watered before they have a chance to fully dry OR there’s too much water around the roots.

Thank you so much for saying that! I read so many articles and none mentioned that, but I can see that being the issue as well with the type of leaves that it has.

No problem! I have a lot of philos and run into this often. Just be careful because too much excreting can eventually create little sap spots that yellow and turn into a fungal infection. Best way is to make sure you have great aerating soil so the water drains right out. :)
