we are getting a frost/cold spell warning tomorrow night. I have some outdoor plants there are about to flower. Is covering them with a sheet or plastic good enough to protect them?

Maybe, it will certainly help but it depends on how cold it gets. If it's a light frost a sheet or lightweight plastic would probably do the trick. If you use plastic make sure you remove it the next morning when it warms up otherwise it will get too warm underneath the plastic.
