Please someone help me figure out what is eating/killing my inch plant. It was beautiful just a week ago and now it’s almost all gone. I keep seeing these white stripes(almost looks like a trail) but no clue if it’s normal or not. Also has little bumps on some of the stems that almost look like roots possibly but no clue. Also I repotted it as parts kept dying off and some of the center stems were almost hollow. The first photo was last week the rest are now.

Aphids… they usually eat the stems and the leaves. To get rid of them… pinch off the infected stems and spray the plant with water.

Will try this tomorrow. I did spray him down the other day to knock off any I maybe couldn’t see but will keep doing it every few days.

The white residue could be their shedded skin…

I have one! Those white stripes hanging from it are completely normal same as the black bumps. The sliver in plant or as I know it The Wandering Jew is actually not a hanging plant. Most people like them to hang down but it puts a lot of stress on the plant it will turn leggy. They love to climb up. So those numbs you see are like feet. They help them hold onto surfaces so they can climb up. Same as those white stripes hanging off. The inside being hollow is either a bug infestation or root rot. If your soil smells like decay and death it’s root rot Other wise it’s probably insects

Thank you so much. This is very good info to know. I’m guessing it does have some bug issues too. I had it in the sunroom for the last 4 months so am just getting him back outside to get some real sun. My oak tree is so large now it shades the sunroom so my plants are all struggling. Hoping the nice days with more sun will start helping them all out.

If you cut back your inch plant it should be able to come back. Cut away diseased parts. I have a different tradescantia and it loves being “hacked” back. Previous commenter is correct and they’re not really hanging plants. They actually function as ground cover in the wild where they’re native. Any bits laying across soil will root and be full and bits that are unrooted will eventually look bare. This is the growth habit of this plant and why it’s important to give it a regular trim

These plants have always been my survivors. I’ve never had problems with them and like you said if a problem did come all I had to do was snip off the bad part stick the rest in soil and I’d have a whole new plant in a week. For some reason this time so many are hollow it’s not working out like that but I’m going to keep trying. They are one of my fav plants with their purple colors. Thanks for the Info I do appreciate it.
