This is my maranta and although I’ve been growing plants for many years I have never come across this. The leaves have grown very thin and the colour and lines are pale. If you turn over the leaves they are grayish in colour, not the beautiful maroon it would have. It doesn’t change if I try to wash it off. I’ve search the internet for answers but nothing is jumping out. The roots are healthy with no rot so this is a leaf problem. Anyway, the damage is extensive and I don’t know if I can get a clean cutting. Until I find an answer I don’t really want to introduce another one.

I’m no expert and I haven’t had a pest problem on my marenta yet. But my first suspicion based on the mottling pattern underleaf is some sort of pest damage and my first suspects would be thrips. Thrips are hard to see (you may see silvery or black flecks - I’m currently battling thrips and am yet to see one), so you’re more likely to see the damage they cause, such as the mottling underleaf yours has, and frass. Frass is a dark liquid they excrete. If it has any dark spots which wipe away (when wet) or wipe away with a wet finger or damp cloth, then that’s likely to be frass. If thrips, I’d isolate the plant and get a systemic pesticide onto it straight away. I wouldn’t normally suggest systemic as a first port of call but given the extensive damage on yours - it’s either that or the bin, sadly. Thrips are a nightmare to get rid of. Maybe check any other plants you have in the same room as thrips can spread (they fly). Fingers crossed it’s not thrips. Good luck 🤞🏼

Let’s hope not as I’m well acquainted with thrips and the work to get rid of them. Thanks for the advice😀

I also am not an expert/not a maranta owner but this might be relevant!

I have no idea but that is so interesting. The manta is a forest floor creeper I believe. Again really interesting. I going to look up more on this topic just as a matter of interest. 😀👍🏻Thanks Kades!

    Hmm…strange! Do you fertilize?

I do. Perhaps over fertilizing? Possible. This is another maranta on the same table.

Okay, now I’m much less convinced it’s thrips :/ Kades might be onto something re. getting too much light? And another culprit could be, depending on when the issue started - temperature fluctuations? If it started when the weather started turning cooler and it’s near a window or doorway or other drafty area, that could upset it. Marentas are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations (or arguably, environmental fluctuations, as drafts may affect the humidity around the plant). I lost a red marenta which I think was due to environmental fluctuations, but my lemon lime marenta has been fine (either it’s slightly more hardy to the environment or my current controls are doing a decent job so it hasn’t been affected in the same way). Of course, it could be something else altogether! It seems Marentas can be rather temperamental. If you figure out what the issue is, please do report back!
