I just wanted to share the results from a cross pollination I’ve done. All of these are unique sibling plants from the same cross pollination I made last year. Cross pollination, or hybridization is a fun hobby if you grow and collect plants that aren’t too hard to get to flower. Some easier plant groups to start with are for example begonias, coleus, gesneriads, geraniums and impatiens. The resulting plants are genetically unique, and hopefully new and beautiful additions for collectors and to the hobby. You can even name any new plants you create as new varieties if they have good enough qualities. The basic steps in order to make a new hybrid plant yourself are: 1. Apply pollen from one plant onto the stigma of another plant. Preferably different varieties or closely related species in the same genus. 2. Let the flower that received the pollen turn into a seed pod and mature fully before harvesting it. 3. Sow these hybrid seeds and grow the seedlings to flowering size for evaluation. 4. Save any plants that you think are interesting enough or have good qualities. You can then repeat the process with these and make another generation of hybrid plants - suddenly you’ve got your own hybridization program. I just wanted to share this with you since hybridising can be another advanced step in your houseplant growing journey. For me it opened up a new dimension and I’m now always curious as to what my new hybrid plants will look like as they grow and their first flower is about to open. Monstera Deliciosa leaf drooping a week after repotting. Take a look at before and after. Truly cant tell if she’s drooping or if she’s just moved in the direction of the sun? These are terrible pics but the first one is just after repotting. The second is a week later. Any thoughts?

Just bought a sansi 36w grow light bulb. Are they any good? Also, do you reckon my bird of paradise will be fine with the light not reaching all its leaves and only some?

Second question of the day: Fertilizing during winter/dormant months. My daughter never uses fertilizer during the winter, allowing the plant to hibernate. I fertilized last year but only every other time it popped up on my task list. What do you guys do?

Grow lights—what’s your feelings? I used them a bit last year, but I'm not sure if I really noticed much of a difference. But this year I've already noticed some sad leaves and decreasing varigation. Maybe my plants are older so they need more intervention? How long do you keep the light on? Keep on during the day? Or night? Full spectrum?

It's time for some more propagation! The smaller ones I'm planning to root then lay ontop of the soil to fill in the gaps as I picked ones with nodes closer together. The bigger ones I'm planning to just root and plant as normal in the pot. About the leaves... I once saw someone grow string of hearts from leaves but I was unsure whether it was fake since I didn't think you could, can you? I had some leaves left over from clearing the stems so I might try it...

I know I'm being a real whiner baby right now, but I just have to grumble to you guys. I have lots of plants. I like having lots of plants. I like taking care of them. But for the love, can't they ALL be healthy/happy for a hot second? I’ll have one looking a little sad, get it back to thriving, then another one decides to throw a tantrum! I know little problems here and there help me learn and all of that, but sometimes I just want a break from the drama, ya know? 😜

This is my first time using LECA and I wanted to share my experience so far with my Anthuriums transitioning from soil to LECA. I’m following the LECA Addict process almost exactly (see my nutrient water formula below). I received the Queen and Luxurian 8/12 and put them in LECA immediately. I cut 2 older small leaves off from the Queen along with the majority of its roots besides 3 short thick ones. I cut off the smallest Luxurian leaf and left maybe a fist size amount of roots. I thoroughly cleaned the soil off the root systems and used 3% hydrogen peroxide. 3 weeks later, the Queen had an ear lobe yellow and has a few new roots coming in. The Luxurians root system is thriving and has a ton of new roots. No new leaves from both Today I transitioned my Silver Blush and Magnificum as well. The Magnificum was 2 plants, so I separated them. The uglier one is just in water and I’m using as an experiment. Some of you know the Magnificums history ⚡️so let’s see how she does :) Hydroton LECA - rinsed 3 times and soaked 3 times for over 3 days Distilled Water - 1 Gallon General Hydroponics CalMag - CalMagic - 5ml Growth Technology Foliage Focus 15-20ml RapidStart - 1-2ml Plant Revolution Orca Premium Liquid Mycorrhizae - 2ml Mr. Fulvic - 1ml pH up / pH down (if needed). I aim for 6-6.5

I have a pothos up on a high shelf in my kitchen. Last year, she was easy to handle and I moved her to better light for the winter. This year, she’s a big ‘ol girl who doubled in size over the last 6 months. Now that the light is changing, I don't want to move her. Unfortunately, the shelf is in the desert of Tatooine as far as electrical outlets go. I'm wondering if anyone has used a battery-powered or rechargeable grow light? Did it work well? I don't even know if they’re out there. I haven't found any online, but I'm going to check with my local nursery too. I guess I could use a rechargeable light and change the bulb? Any suggestions? 🙏

I’ve been thinking about this for weeks now.. what plant do you think would grow well in a car?!?! My mom gave me a snake plant cutting in a plastic cup for transport and I took it home with me in the cup holder of my back seat… and in typical ADHD fashion I left it in there for about 3 weeks just refilling the water ever so often lol. It was a little experiment, but then I went on vacation and TRULY forgot about it so it fully dried up and died lol. For a plant to survive in the car for me ay least it would definitely have to be in the summer I’m thinking (east coast, jersey) but I wanted to see everyone’s thoughts!! It was kind of a cute way to decorate my car with a plant somehow LOL

I'm old enough to recall the “Hands Across America” campaign. This was a public fundraising event on Sunday, May 25, 1986, when 5 to 6.5 million people held hands for 15 minutes in an attempt to form a continuous human chain across the contiguous United States. I'm now attempting to create a “Leaves Across My House” art installation.😜 If I position each plant so that one of its leaves is touching another plant, I can create a chain throughout all the open rooms of my house. So far, my living room, to the kitchen, to the hallway, are all holding “hands.” I wonder how far I can keep it going? 😂

I met this woman at the farmers market today and I was telling her about this app and how much fun it is. We exchanged tips on plants and gardening and she told me her trick when gardening without wearing gloves. I thought it was so cool, I wanted to share it with you guys. Before she starts working she takes a bar of soap and scratches it with her nails to create a barrier. When she's done working she just washes her hands. The soap keeps the dirt from sticking under her nails and also washes the dirt away. I can't wait to try it!

Fertilizer hack: I have a jug of fertilizer under the kitchen sink to pull out when I have plants to fertilize. If you also keep a container pre-filled, I have a great time-saver to share. When you're mixing up your liquid fertilizer, make it double-strength. Then fill your watering device half full of the mix, and then fill the container to the top to dilute to the proper concentration. Then you're not mixing up a new jug every few days. 👌
