I need to make a new batch of monstera/ pothos/philo chunky potting mix. Those of you who mix up their own, I’d love to see your ratio/recipe and what included. Thanks all!

I do it by eye and depends on what I have on hand but it’s roughly 2 parts potting soil, 1 part perlite or pumice, 1 part coco chips, 1 part orchid bark and a handful of horticultural charcoal

Mines about the same and I eyeball it too. I use 2 parts coconut coir, 1 part perlite or Vermiculite (for my moisture loving plants), 1 part orchid mix, and also a handful of horticultural charcoal.

50% soil, 25% orchid bark, 25% perlite big and little combined, and a small bag of charcoal chips mixed in. And I use that for everything so hopefully everything likes it!

Does anyone else use coconut coir instead of potting soil?

Generally only in my terrariums or as a part of a propagating substrate for mosses. If I want to go soilless for plants, I’d rather not use things that will break down and opt for LECA or pumice instead

Anastasia, I’ve typically used coco coir (and it’s worked well for me) until I got all these replies saying to use potting soil instead. Maybe I’ll make some each way and see which I prefer?

Yeah, now I'm wondering/worried?!? I don't know why but I love breaking up the bricks - it feels like I'm making my own soil haha BB I need to know how it breaks down and what that means?!? Actually I'm too impatient and will prob go Google it but thank you for bringing it to my attention!

Wow! Thank you, I can't believe I didn't know this. I've been using it for about a year. I can't even remember why I started using it - this is what I get for watching too many YouTube plant videos haha I'll be switching back to planting soil!

From google (in case anyone is an idiot like me 🙋🏼‍♀️) Key Differences: Coir vs. Potting Soil • Nutrients: Potting soil has organic matter and minerals. Pure coco coir is inert and sterile, meaning you must feed plants with regular fertilizers. • Water & Aeration: Coir acts like a sponge, holding 7 to 10 times its weight in water while maintaining great airflow for roots. Unlike peat moss, it does not become hard or dry out into a water-repellent (hydrophobic) block. • Pests: Coir naturally resists fungus gnats, mold, and rot better than traditional peat-based soils. • Chemicals: Raw coir can sometimes hold excess sodium and potassium, and it binds to calcium and magnesium (requiring a Cal-Mag supplement for heavy feeders). I do use Cal-Mag, so maybe that's saved me. I remember now - whoever I watched mixed Cal-Mag in the water they used to expand the coir and that's what I do. At least now i won't rush to repot every plant haha next reporting will be with potting soil!

1 potting soil 2 bags of orchid potting mix (has charcoal, perlite and bark) 4 cups of earthworm castings 2 handfuls of mosquito bits for the gnats 😂

That’s smart to add the mosquito bits.
