I picked up this little Thai Con at Walmart for $25. I tried to get them to mark it down more because his two biggest leaves had snapped and were hanging on by a thread, but the cashier wasn't having it. So I took him home anyways and cut off the broken leaves, treated him for pests and repotted him. This is my first monstera and I'm worried I've already made some mistakes. I plan to change the substrate soon, after learning how prone they are to root rot. I did mix the potting mix VERY heavy with pearlite but I fear it's not enough. I plan to repot in LECA once I get my hands on some. I think the pot he is too large as well. He is getting filtered light from both an east and south facing window. Any thoughts/opinions on what else I should do/change to be successful? It's taken me a lot of courage to get a plant with this much potential. My gateway plant was a moth orchid followed by calatheas and other various tropical dudes. Should I wait to change substrate since I just repotted him? I'm just so anxious about the root rot. Thanks in advance for any advice/opinions.

$25 for a Thai Con is a great find! My Walmart had 4 the other day and I’m kicking myself for not getting one lol. I’m sure others will chime in with tips, but I’d say good decision to repot. From experience, the pink princess philo’s I’ve bought from the same grower at Walmart all had pretty water retentive soil so I’m sure it was the same for your Thai con. You can try the leca/hydroponic route if you want and have experience, but it’s not necessary to keeping Thai con’s alive. Mine’s in a mix of indoor potting soil, perlite, and medium coarseness orchid bark and doing fine. I would suggest downsizing the planter it’s in though. I checked out his profile you attached (very helpful btw) and 7in might be too large for him right now. How big was his root ball when you repotted? Monsteras prefer to be pretty snug in their pots and he doesn’t look to be very big yet (I know you said he lost his biggest leaves). A bigger pot means more soil to retain water and if the roots aren’t there yet it will increase his risk of root rot. I would think a 5in might be better right now, also considering he’s going to be splitting energy between making new roots and new growth point/s to replace his broken one. For reference, I just moved my Thai con out of a 7in pot and he’s a foot and a half tall with 17” leaves.

Thank you so much for your reply!! I truly appreciate the feedback. I'm going to take your advice and make my own mix with some added orchid bark and downsize. I had a feeling that pot wasnt ideal. His root ball was kinda small which worries me. I have a four inch nursery pot I can clean and get him into once I get more orchid bark. Again, thanks for the info and help!

Sounds great! The location and amount of sunlight sound like a good spot for it too. Good luck!
