Hi! I just got a Thai Constellation the other day and wondering how to know if I should repot it. It's got a handful of roots coming out of the bottom of the pot already and it looks like it might be a smidge rootbound, but not sure if Thais mind that or not. Just recently got into house plants and this is my first monstera. Thank you!

Thai constellations are very prone to root rot so use a well draining mix, I would remove all the old soil and mix it about 50-50 with better grow orchid mix (I get mine at Lowes) and if it needs to go into a bigger pot the rule of thumb is usually 2 inches bigger than the root ball it’ll probably be able to fit back inside of the original pot. water when the plant’s leaves droop down lightly and the soil is completely dry I recommend bottom watering Good luck

Thank you! I am using soil and better gro's special orchid mix (same as their regular orchid mix just without sphagnum moss) for my ROF philodendron, so I will do the same for my Thai! Luckily I have a lot of orchids so I always have orchid mix on hand lol

Learning how to water them is a bit of a learning curve! For Phalaenopsis (the kind you commonly see in grocery stores), once you know what to look for, they are pretty easy! The biggest issue is overwatering. They are often sold in super densely packed moss or peat that's too water retentive long term and leads to root rot. They prefer a wet/dry cycle, so fully dry between watering. Pot them in orchid bark (or an orchid bark mix) in a clear pot so you can see the roots. When they are dry, they will be pale and silvery. Water by soaking the pot/roots for 15 minutes, roots will turn brighter green, then drain all excess water and don't water again until the roots are back to pale and silvery. They should dry out within about 10 ish days. And don't mist them or get water on the crown/stem/leaves.

Oh, also a lot of people don't realize that the flowers and flowers spikes are temporary, and think the orchid is dead once the flowers drop and the spikes start dying back. But typically orchids only bloom once a year, give or take.
