Hey ya’ll I’m looking for some help and some answers as to why my monsteras leaves are browning. This is a plant I rescued a year ago now and have had great success with until the last couple months. She is about 3 feet from SE facing window and gets a good amount of light so I have had to stay on top of watering but am still seeing browning on the leaves. I have started to mist her as I assumed it was a humidity issue but I have seen no improvements. She is putting out new leaves but some have started to brown and die off before they even unfurl. Let me know what you think and what I should do. I have considered putting her on a moss pole but don’t know where to start or what materials I should buy so I am open to recommendations!

Hi! It’s hard to tell from the pictures but the way the leaves are browning indicate a thrips infestation. Do you see lots of little white or black bugs on the brown parts? They love brand new leaves so they will have also burrowed into any new growth and that’s why they’re coming out brown. Also, misting for humidity does not last long enough and can invite rot/pests from the water that just sits on the leaves. I’d highly recommend getting a humidifier.

Also, re: the moss pole, I use the same type you have. I think your plant is well supported and that is not the issue here (though you may consider putting the pole behind the back of the plant instead of kinda in front of it like you can see in your last picture). If you want to go really legit with the moss pole, you can wrap sphagnum moss around a PVC pipe and keep the moss moist (with a sprayer this time). That will encourage the aerial roots to burrow into it.

Omg it is thrips!! I have never had a plant with thrips so I had no idea what they looked like. Spider mites I’ve dealt with but not this!

Tragic. You should wipe all of the bugs off with a wet paper towel or hose the whole plant down (avoiding letting the water run into the soil so that the thrips don’t get in the soil—they will burrow and reproduce there). Do tops and bottoms of the leaves, the stem, and the top of the soil! Then spray it with a pest control. I like Captain Jacks Dead Bug Spray. Quarantine the plant for a while until you don’t see any anymore.

Sorry for the novels but adding one last thing. Once brown the leaves will not bounce back. Take off the worst affected leaves. If all the leaves are messed up, consider trashing the plant and getting a new one. If you take off most leaves, remember to leave a few so the plant can still photosynthesize and grow new leaves.
