Not So Green Thumb

Hi all! I need help… bought this girl in the mail 2 weeks ago. I watered once I received her but not since and the soil is still moist, so I know she isn’t dry. I’ve noticed a few brown spots on the leaves I figured it was from being transported in a box. Now I see brown tips. She is close to a radiator because it’s my only available window, the radiator is closed and she is on a stand. Any thoughts? FYI I live in the Northeast so I’m using a grow light and mist my plants every other day.

Do the brown spots feel very thin/papery? Do you see any reddish-ness on the underside of the leaves? It may be thrips.

Thanks for your help Melanie! Thin yes, but no red on the undersides. I haven’t identified any pests so far. I sprayed the top layer of soil with neem spray just in case. I didn’t want to spray the leaves and make anything worse as I’m thinking the larger areas may be damage that is just starting to brown. I compared what she looks like today to the night I received her and I can see a few areas with a different shade of green, almost looked bruised. I’ll continue to watch her. Could the brown tips be related to dry air?

It could be, but there could be a few causes of it, so you kinda just have to go through a process of elimination to see what works. Since you also have the spotting on the leaves, I’m thinking it’s pests. But it could be dry air affecting the tips. It could be both. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Usually what I do is cut off the brown tip as I start working through the process of elimination. So for example, cut off the tip, increase the humidity in your air, give it like a month, and if it turns brown again it’s being caused by something else. However, if it is pests then that additional month of not treating the plant could make things a lot worse, so you can try both increasing humidity and treating for pests and see if things improve in a month.

I’m thinking the brown tips and spots are two different issues. What’s your humidity like? Dry conditions will cause brown tips. Try adding a humidifier or paying closer attention to watering frequency. The brown spots - I really don’t think it’s a pest issue. I think it might be a fungus issue. Regardless, doesn’t hurt to spray with insecticide. Do some research and see if you can find this as a type of fungus. If you do, prune the infected leaves and spray the plant with fungicide.
