Let me tell you a story about a mysterious orchid that refuses to die no matter how much I neglect her. I don’t mean to leave her high and dry but my ignorance can’t be blamed anymore. Ok, what you have there is an oncidium, not a phalaenopsis orchid. However, that particular mix is heavy in sphagnum moss, so it would probably work fine for these water loving oncidium orchids. Yes- I’d recommend an orchid pot- generally clear plastic, with lots of slits or ventilation holes. because although these tend to like more water than your standard phal, it’s still an epiphytic orchid, and therefore needs aeration around the roots. Do not pack it in too tightly. Think light and fluffy. If you want excellent repotting advice, I would look on YouTube for Miss orchid girl. Search her name and oncidium repot. This way you’ll have really good visuals of what you’re looking for and excellent explanations on why. She’s got a vast history of videos. But as far as the basics, you’re going to want to trim away all dead roots, and potentially some old dead pseudobulbs. Get rid of as much of the old potting media as you can, without hurting the roots. Repot at an appropriate level so that it’s not so low that you risk rotting any more bulbs.
